Rapture. After World War II, Andrew Ryan defied the authority of the major nations of the world by building his own city underneath the Atlantic Ocean. A place without censorship, a place without moral restrictions, a place where you can do whatever your heart desires.
The plane you are riding crashes into the middle of the Atlantic in 1960. You find a small structure, and with nowhere else to go, enter a small submersible inside. As the submersible descends through the ocean, you are shown a video by Andrew Ryan. As it finishes, a vast city is revealed under the water; whales, squids, and fish swimming between the massive buildings. The submersible rises into a port, and you see the true side of the city for the first time.
The silhouette of a man cowering in fear as he cries out pleas to something lurking in the shadows. A flash of light reveals a human-like creature weilding two hooks. The light disappears and you see the silhouette start to rip apart the cowering man.
Bioshock is an FPS/Adventure game that challenges morality like Splinter Cell Double Agent couldn't even dream of. The enemies are humans who have become morphed by the use of gene-altering "plasmids" (You should know what these are if you're in biology.), which are meant to alter the body and give people whatever characteristic they desire. There is a man who is scared of this dead "Fontaine" guy; a plastic-surgeon who went crazy in his pursuit of human perfection; a man who kills people for art; and many more. (I really don't give credit to these guy. They are fu*king creepy.)
There are also these giant "things" in the old-style diving suits, one of the two types has a drill for an arm and the other has a grenade launcher, that randomly walk around Rapture. As long as you don't do two things, they'll leave you alone: don't attack them, and don't get to close to the little sisters. The little sisters are genetically modified little girls who run around rapture gathering Adam (the genetic currency) that are very weak and need body guards or else they'd get killed. When you encounter one, you have to kill the guardian and decide whether you want to rescue her--get little adam but keep her alive--or harvest her--kill her and get more adam.
Despite the moral decay, there are several people who can be called "good" (even though they'd be executed for crimes against humanity on the surface). Dr. Tenenbaum, a Jew that helped the Nazis do scientific experiments on other Jews in concentration camps, is the one who modified the little girls, and given that you don't kill them, she helps you towards the end. There is some botanist I can't remember the name of who helps you at one point (she dies, so meh).
When you get to Rapture, a man named Atlas helps you get your bearings, and then asks you to help him rescue his family. As you get close, Mr. Ryan blows up the sub they are in and kills them, and your mission becomes to just simply kill Ryan. Your quest brings you against some of the worst in Rapture. You have to kill a mad-doctor to get a key to an office. You're taken hostage by an artist and have to kill people to complete his "masterpiece".
The back-story in this game is told through audio diary entries. You find tape players scattered across rapture that give a glimpse into what the city was like on New Year's Eve 1959. There are several people who's story is told in these diaries: a woman who is in love with Ryan, Dr. Tenenbaum, McDonough: who always talks realistically about how the city is degrading, and several other less-recurring people.
This game manages to bring creepy to a new level. Famous '50s songs (such as "Papa Loves Mama", and "Under the Sea") play over the intercom. Mutated people walk, whistling a tune, singing "Jesus Loves Me", or crying about how their lives are fucked up. You can find people crucified, a stack of bibles below their feet. There are diary entries of people screaming during an operation gone wrong.
Awesome game: 9.5/10. Best if you play it in the middle of the night when nobody else is home, with surround sound blasting out of the speakers.
Warning: don't play if you are over sympathetic or are easily freaked out. I haven't even begun to describe how fucked up some of the shit in this game is. _________________ Individual liberty > your face
